The Life Sciences Network’s purpose is to:
- Support the growth of southwestern Pennsylvania’s life sciences industry
- Provide lectures and seminar series on topics relevant to the life science industry
- Create opportunities for members to meet, share information and work collaboratively
- Serve as a comprehensive, representative voice in marketing communications and advocacy for the region’s life sciences industry
Network Participants
Network members benefit from attendance at informational events and from interaction with peers in the many biomedical and life sciences enterprises throughout the region. The network’s membership includes representatives from firms that use biotechnologies, bioengineering, medical device expertise and life sciences in developing products, as well as firms whose products target the medical, pharmaceutical, healthcare (including personal care), bioresearch, agricultural and life sciences industries. These companies include but are not limited to firms engaged in:
- Bioinformatics
- Biological/medical imaging
- Clinical research services
- Medical devices, supplies and diagnostics
- Medical informatics
- Medical robotics
- Microbiological testing and/or bioremediation
- Pharmaceutical development

Pittsburgh Life Sciences Greenhouse
The Council's Life Sciences Network is also pleased to work with the Pittsburgh Life Sciences Greenhouse (PLSG). PLSG is a public/private partnership, founded by the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, UPMC Health System, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and our regional foundation community.
Together with private industry and advanced research and healthcare capabilities of its institutional partners, PLSG invests in and supports the growth of regional life sciences companies. The PLSG is focused on developing a portfolio of companies in the following industry sectors:
- Drug discovery tools and targets
- Biomedical devices
- Tissues engineering
- Neurological/psychiatric strategy

The network represents the region’s life sciences industry at state and national industry conferences. It also markets the life sciences industry through regional and state Web sites, increasing broad-based awareness of the region's growing strength as a hub of expertise and capabilities. It contributes a representative voice to discussions on regional economic development and industry promotion initiatives while offering input on government funding and legislation at the local, state and federal levels.
