Engage Your Elected Officials.

The PTC produces a series of events to help educate our member companies about federal and state procurement and grant opportunities and introduce members to the government officials who represent them. To this end, the B2G program also seeks to create valuable relationships between key officials in government agencies and prime government contractors.

B2G: DOD Innovation Needs and Focus Areas

Thursday, March 01, 2012

12:30 PM - 2:15 PM
Location: Carnegie Mellon University, University Center, 5032 Forbes Ave., Pgh 15213 ( 2nd Floor - Rangos III)

The Honorable Zachary Lemnios is the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering (ASD(R&E)). As ASD(R&E), Mr. Lemnios is the Chief Technology Officer for the U.S. Department of Defense. Mr. Lemnios will address members of Pittsburgh's innovation community on March 1st to outline the core imperatives of the DOD's research and engineering initiatives.

Mr. Lemnios is responsible for coordinating research efforts across the DOD's research and engineering enterprise, which includes, among others, the efforts of the following agencies: DARPA, the Office of Naval Research, the Army Research Laboratory, the Air Force Research Laboratory, Force Health Protection and Readiness and the Defense Threat Reduction Agency.

Lemnios will outline the core research thrusts of the Department’s Research and Engineering Enterprise.Those thrusts include the following initiatives: • Autonomy: Autonomous systems to augment military operations;
• Counter Weapons of Mass Destruction: Counter known, unknown and emerging threats;
• Cyber: Improve the DoD performance for all operations in cyber space;
• Data-to-Decisions: Shorten the cycle time from data gathering to decisions;
• Electronic Warfare & Protection: Enhance the electromagnetic spectrum as a military domain;
• Human Systems: Improve the fusion of humans and systems;
• Engineering Resilient Systems: Expedite design and delivery of trustworthy, adaptable and affordable defense systems.

Lemnios will also discuss the Department’s new Rapid Innovation Fund that Congress designed to allow the DoD to rapidly develop and deploy new and evolving technologies that address key national security issues and war fighters’ urgent needs. This process enables the DoD to communicate those challenges to the nation’s innovation community; to solicit whitepapers from small businesses; and to provide up to $3 million (on a case-by-case basis) to develop and deploy a new solution or technology (must be deployable within 2 years).

For all of these reasons, this session is appropriate for existing DoD contractors, but we strongly encourage new-to-DoD participants to attend this session and learn more about the critical innovation challenges and initiatives that are underway in the Department of Defense. Space is limited and will be reserved on a first-come basis.

On April 22, 2010, the Pittsburgh Technology Council hosted an event sponsored by Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney with Dr. Thomas Cellucci, Chief Commercialization Officer at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.  Dr. Cellucci outlined the unique process that DHS employs to “commercialize” technologies that are needed by the various departments at DHS, but also by our nation’s operators of critical infrastructure and the first responder community.  If you missed Dr. Cellucci’s presentation, you can find a copy of his powerpoint presentation here.
