IT for a Cause; in support of women in tech!
IT for a Cause Silent Auction in support of RedChairPGH will happen in conjunction with the 2019 CIO of the Year.
Funds raised will be used to support Red Chair Pittsburgh events and initiatives including leadership development scholarships for mid-career women in tech with EDGE, executive coaching, and DDI Development Pack programs.
RedChairPGH was formed in 2015 as a grassroots effort in response to troubling statistics in the tech workforce that showed a declining participation rate for women in computer science; from a peak of 37% in 1984 to less than 20% in 2011. In November of 2015, with the support from the University of Pittsburgh, RedChairPGH hosted a #sitwithme event to raise awareness of this disparity in Pittsburgh. For the first time, Pittsburgh technology professionals and executives came together to start the conversation and begin closing the gender gap. After another successful event in 2016, RedChairPGH established a formal Board of Directors in 2017 and contracted with FortyX80 as thier fiscal sponsor. The Board chose to focus on mid-career women in tech, as statistics show that women leave tech careers in mid-career at twice the rate of men. RedChairPGH believes they can make a positive impact through awareness and programming. RedChairPGH chosses to collaborate with other groups because they believe through synergy we can multiply passion and energy.
The red chair is symbolic. When women and men “sit” to take a stand, they validate women in computing and IT and recognize them for the important role they play in creating future technology. The red chair gives all of us a constructive way to show our solidarity and invite others to participate. The bold red color grabs attention and encourages action. By “sitting together” we hold space for an honest conversation and create a platform for online and offline discussions about our challenges and hopes for the future.
