EMTEL Energy USA Builds a Better Battery

Steve Whittingham, LaFace and McGovern

The headline of the article is a little misleading because Emtel Energy USA isn’t your typical battery. In fact, it’s not a battery at all. This is a long-winded description, but Emtel’s energy storage is hybrid-graphene, solid state, supercapacitor-based Electrostatic Long Duration Energy Storage (ELDES). In short, it’s supercapacitor energy storage.

Historically, capacitors have offered longevity and extremely fast charge/discharge cycles. Until now, they have suffered from a lack of controlled energy release and low energy density.

Emtel’s market-disruptive technology, developed and primarily manufactured through UAE-based Enercap Technologies, holds multiple patents on their ability to manage charge retention, flatten voltage curves, control self-discharge and additional feats potentially never seen before in supercaps. Energy density has also been addressed with the Emtel solution, with 460Wh/kg currently, and set to achieve a jump in density to 800Wh/kg by Q4 2025.

This disruptive technology has harnessed the capabilities of supercapacitors and mitigated their downsides to produce a revolutionary energy storage system. Through proprietary algorithm-based microcontrollers and power electronics, these limitations are eliminated, enabling supercapacitor-based storage to replace chemical batteries.

As the world shifts towards AI, causing an increased strain on traditional grids, Energy Storage Systems (ESS) are becoming an integral part of the energy landscape. ESS enables us to store excess energy for later use, stabilizing the grid, and improving the efficiency of renewable energy sources like solar and wind.

Here is how Emtel’s ELDES separates itself from traditional ESS:

Fire & Thermal Runaway Risk – No more!

Emtel’s encapsulated modules store energy electrostatically with no chemical reaction during charge and discharge cycles. They are non-flammable with no thermal runaway or heat signature. While ensuring maximum safety, the lack of heat production also means that ELDES doesn’t require supplemental HVAC, even in extreme temperatures, operating at full efficiency from -22°F to 140°F. Systems can operate safely in even further extreme temps, with slightly reduced efficiency.

Limited Lifespan and Cycle Degradation – Thing of the Past!

Lithium-ion BESS typically only last 8–15 years and degrade with every charge/discharge cycle. A typical life span is only 3,000-6,000 charge cycles. Over time, the effective energy capacity diminishes, requiring eventual augmentation or replacement which can double or triple the total lifecycle cost. Emtel’s encapsulated cells can withstand >500,000 charge/discharge cycles with four cycles per day at 100% depth of discharge- meaning systems offer full nameplate capacity with no need to oversize. With over 99% round trip efficiency, Emtel’s energy storage modules have nearly zero loss or degradation over 20 years. In fact, Emtel’s ESS, the ENPACK offers a 20-year warranty that guarantees >95% efficiency at end of life.

Supply Chain, Material, & Environmental Concerns – Don’t have any!

Reliance on critical raw materials (e.g., lithium, cobalt, nickel) raises concerns about environmental impact from mining, geopolitical dependencies, and supply chain volatility. Lithium also comes with expensive end-of-life recycling challenges. Emtel’s modules are environmentally friendly and made from a proprietary blend of recycled synthetic graphene which eliminates the need for any rare earth mining or geopolitical dependencies. No hazardous materials are used, allowing safety and sustainability throughout the entire life cycle. Modules are 80% biodegradable and 100% recyclable.

Applications

Telecom: MicroEcono Modules reduce or eliminate the need for a generator at cell tower sites.

Residential/Small Business: EMWALL, Emtel Energy USA’s first product under their brand, is made in USA and offers scalable storage in 8kWh increments. Microgrid-ready (grid, generator, and solar integrative)

Critical Infrastructure: ENRACK offers nanosecond response time as a critical system backup or UPS alternative for commercial and industrial applications including data centers, government, manufacturing, healthcare, etc.

Utility-Scale ESS: ENPACK is a custom-configured, utility-scale energy storage solution designed to deliver true resilience and support a decentralized, sustainable power grid. ENPACK containers support capacities ranging from hundreds of kilowatts to multiple gigawatts. A 40-foot container currently stores up to 4.2 MWh, with projections to reach 10 MWh by the end of 2025.

ENPACK’s strength lies in its complete-system design, though customers may also purchase storage components à la carte. Systems can include the patented, highly sophisticated ENSERVER—inverter, EMS, and BMS in one—along with MPPTs, microgrid controllers, and more. Delivered preassembled, ENPACK arrives plug-and-play and can intelligently manage and blend up to eight energy sources, including grid, generator, solar, wind, and hydro. Commissioning typically takes less than two hours.

Note: All applications are able to be Grid-Tied, Partial-Grid, or Microgrid capable. Perfect for peak shaving and load shifting.
