Avoid a Bad Hire!

by Traci Sanderson, PsyCap Solutions

The problem that employees and organizations face in the modern workplace is it is more competitive and technology connects employees to the organization 24 hours a day and seven days a week. The resultant increased work demands have led to burnout and disengagement with a need for more work-life balance and focus on overall well-being. Retaining talent has been a curse in the year 2022 and will continue to plague us in the year 2023. Organizations are struggling with retention as well as keeping a culture of engaged employees. It is within this space that PsyCap Solutions can help. It is within this space that an Industrial and Organizational Psychologist are much needed and necessary.

It is important to first describe what an industrial and organizational (I/O) psychologist is. When I tell people I am an I/O psychologist they immediately say, with a worried chuckle, “Are you analyzing me, are you going to say I am crazy?” The answer is no. I/O psychologists are basically workplace consultants and coaches. They assist with strategies to address and improve employee performance and well-being. They address and assist workplace issues concerning critical topics that affect individuals, teams and the organizations. These topics include retention and engagement, burnout, hybrid work, leadership development, hiring and selecting future talent, change initiative, and DEI to name a few.

PsyCap Solutions addresses these topics through consulting and coaching services. We focus on talent selection and talent management and are committed to assessing, training and developing talent. By using a strengths-based approach and positive psychology we can help businesses hire the right people, develop talented employees, build great leaders, and impact the bottom line. At PsyCap Solutions we are experts at personality assessments along with a variety of other assessments that go beyond traditional hiring processes that better predict a more successful hire.

As I/O Psychologist, my methodology aids in finding the RIGHT candidate by going beyond the typical resume and interview process. I can help shine a light on a candidate’s hidden strengths, but more importantly, reveal unknown blind spots that are better predictors of performance and workplace synergy. I shed light on a candidate’s motivations and values and the likelihood of organizational fit and success in the job. I have heard this statement so many times, “I thought we hired the right candidate, but they quit within the first year of being hired.”  The time, energy, and cost associated with a bad hire can be detrimental to an organization, especially with a small startup. A bad hire can be minimized if not avoided. Pre-hire assessments such as personality tests help reduce turnover, identify high-potential talent, develop employees and leaders, and promote diversity and inclusion.

Another valuable service at PsyCap Solutions that impacts retaining and developing good talent is coaching. Professionals gain an objective perspective on their career. One-on-one coaching helps the employee or leader gain insight and increased self-awareness while achieving a plan for growth, development and application. Coaching guides clients toward ways they can best leverage their strengths and skills that result in increased career success and fulfillment. PsyCap Solutions helps you identify where you are now in your career and guides you to where you want to be to achieve personal and professional growth.
