The region is bursting with creative minds passionate about scientific innovation, education, and research. Each year, Carnegie Science Center celebrates exceptional innovators who are making a difference in western Pennsylvania with the Carnegie Science Awards, presented by Eaton. The program honors awardees in 16 categories, including Corporate Innovation, Start-Up Entrepreneur, Innovation in Energy, Science Communicator, and several educator categories. These people and organizations have directly contributed to the region’s growing science and technology community, and their achievements have often reached beyond southwestern Pennsylvania. In addition, a Chairman’s Award is presented to one person or organization that has made outstanding contributions in science, either through exemplary work in one field or through transcendent leadership, commitment, or achievement. “The Carnegie Science Awards provide an opportunity to celebrate the remarkably talented individuals and organizations in our region’s science community,” said Jason Brown, Henry Buhl, Jr., Interim Director of Carnegie Science Center. “These innovators have had immeasurable impact on Pittsburgh’s healthcare, manufacturing, energy, environmental, and education industries. Their achievements, dedication, and perseverance are truly inspiring.” Brown said that the individuals and organizations honored with Carnegie Science Awards are prime examples of what can be accomplished with a quality education in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). “STEM education prepares students to solve real-world problems like the ones our awardees have faced,” Brown said. “Each awardee has found success due to their skills in teamwork, communication, creativity, innovation, and critical thinking, which are all core tenets of STEM education.” Thanks to the generous support of committed sponsors, the Carnegie Science Awards has honored the accomplishments of nearly 600 individuals and organizations since the program’s inception. Eaton is the presenting sponsor for the Carnegie Science Awards. At the 23rd Annual Carnegie Science Awards Celebration on Friday, May 10, 2019, at Carnegie Science Center, awardees will be honored along with three student winners from the Covestro Pittsburgh Regional Science & Engineering Fair. The Science Center’s signature celebration of innovation and annual fundraiser for STEM education features a strolling dinner, silent auction, and awards show that will share the inspiring stories behind the awardees’ accomplishments. The evening offers a rich networking opportunity and raises funds to support the Science Center’s education programs that identify, nurture, and inspire the next generation of leaders in science and technology.
