MESCIUS: Building the Tools Behind the Software

Some of the most important technology companies aren’t building the applications you use every day. They’re building the tools that make those applications possible. That’s where MESCIUS USA, Inc. fits into Pittsburgh’s technology story.

With roots stretching back through ComponentOne and GrapeCity, MESCIUS has spent decades creating software tools that help developers build applications faster and more efficiently. Chris Bannon, Product Manager for SpreadJS, has been along for nearly 20 years of that journey, joining ComponentOne in East Liberty in 2007 as a web developer before moving into product development and management.

The easiest way to understand MESCIUS might be to think about a toolbox. If software developers are the people building the digital infrastructure of modern business, MESCIUS gives them the hammers, saws and power drills.

“We build tools for developers,” Bannon explained. Those tools include charts, data grids, reporting capabilities, spreadsheets and document services that can dramatically reduce the amount of work required to create an application. Customers range from individual developers to Fortune 500 companies.
Bannon boiled the value proposition down even further: “We really just sell time.”

That idea becomes particularly interesting when the conversation turns to one of technology’s most enduring workhorses: the spreadsheet.
For all the talk over the years about moving beyond spreadsheets, Bannon says they never really disappeared. Companies built business intelligence systems, dashboards and specialized applications, but spreadsheets remained deeply embedded in daily operations. Business-critical decisions, he noted, are still being made in Excel every day.
There’s a reason. Rows, columns and tables are intuitive. People understand them. The problem has always been what happens when a spreadsheet gets complicated.

Building formulas, managing multiple sheets, creating pivot tables and extracting insights can require deep expertise and hours of tedious work. AI is beginning to erase that barrier.

MESCIUS is adding AI capabilities to SpreadJS, its JavaScript spreadsheet component. Instead of needing to know exactly how to construct a complicated spreadsheet or formula, users can increasingly describe what they want and let an AI assistant do the heavy lifting.
Bannon compared the experience to having a spreadsheet expert sitting beside you. Ask for a trend, analysis or sophisticated workbook and the AI can perform work that once might have taken hours or days.

“You don’t need to know how to build it,” he said. “You can simply ask an AI agent.”

For Bannon, that is also a preview of AI’s broader impact on the workplace.

He compares this moment to the introduction of computers into offices. Word processing didn’t eliminate the need to write. It made writing, editing and sharing information dramatically more efficient. AI, he believes, will create a similar leap by eliminating tedious tasks and helping people get to answers faster. “It’s going to make people much more efficient at their jobs,” Bannon said.

MESCIUS is applying the same thinking directly to software development. Its MCP server gives AI coding agents deeper knowledge of MESCIUS products, including correct API usage and best practices, helping developers build sophisticated applications more quickly while still keeping human expertise in the loop. Bannon himself uses AI coding tools by first asking them to create detailed development plans, then reviewing architecture and technical decisions before allowing the AI to write the code.

That balance may define the next chapter of software development: AI handles more of the repetitive mechanics while skilled people spend more time deciding what should be built and how it should work.

For a Pittsburgh company that has always been in the business of giving developers better tools, it feels less like a reinvention than the next logical step. MESCIUS has spent decades helping developers build faster.

Now AI is putting an entirely new engine inside the toolbox.
