Dr. Giorgio Coraluppi: Tech Icon 1934-2022
Dr. Giorgio Coraluppi, Founder of Compunetics, Compunetix and Chorus Call, died in the early morning of September 28, 2022. Affectionately known as Dr. C., Giorgio was instrumental in the founding of the Pittsburgh Technology Council back in 1983 and actively served on its board of directors until his passing.
He was born on February 20, 1934 in L’Aquila, Italy.
Giorgio is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Luisa; his children Sabina, Monica, Chiara (Daniel) and Stefano (Stefania); his grandchildren Antonio (Rachel), Giulia (Dominic), Luisa, Giacomo, Daniela, and Giovanni; and his sister Luisa with her six children. He was preceded in death by his parents Guido and Annamaria, and his siblings Paolo, Carlamaria, and Alberto.
Giorgio was raised first in L’Aquila and then in Milano, where his family moved in 1946. He earned a Ph.D. in Engineering from the Politecnico di Milano in 1958 and an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon in 1966. After graduating from the Politecnico di Milano, he was a Research Assistant at the Istituto di Fisica Tecnica of the Politecnico di Milano before serving as a Lieutenant in the Italian Air Force for 18 months. Starting in 1961, he worked in the Electronics Research Laboratory of Olivetti while also holding a teaching position at the Politecnico di Milano during the same period. In 1964 he joined the Space Defense Division of the American Optical Company in Pittsburgh. In 1968, he founded Compunetics Inc. and, in later years, the affiliate corporations Compunetix Inc. and Chorus Call Inc. He continued to lead these companies as President and CEO until his passing.
Giorgio received many patents and professional awards over the years, including the Pittsburgh Technology Council CEO of the Year Award in 2013 and induction into the Space Technology Hall of Fame in 2020. The Giorgio Coraluppi Headship in Electrical and Computer Engineering was established at Carnegie Mellon University in 2022.
Giorgio devoted his life to his family, his faith, his mathematical research, and his professional work, striving to make the world a better place. He touched many lives and will be deeply missed.
Friends will be received at John A. Freyvogel Sons, Inc. 4900 Centre Avenue at Devonshire Street (freyvogelfuneralhome.com) on Saturday October 1, and Sunday October 2, 2022 from 2-6pm. Funeral Monday October 3, 2022, a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at Saint Paul Cathedral (108 North Dithridge Street) at 10am. At the request of the family, everyone please gather at church. Entombment will be private.
